    ## **Overview**

Corrections departments are faced with many challenges such as safety, transportation, contraband, access control, and others. Fortunately, technology has been able to help mitigate many of these challenges. In this activity, you are briefed on authentic events that frequently disrupted corrections operations and then asked to flex your Agility, Public Safety, and Security skills to describe tools that will address four problem areas faced by corrections operations.

    ## **Instructions**

    ### **Preparation**

    – View the [Technology in Corrections BriefingLinks to an external site.](https://media.capella.edu/CourseMedia/sumid000108/wrapper.asp) video that introduces you to the types of challenges to corrections operations and challenges you to find solutions.
    – Download the [Week 10 Assignment Template](https://canvas.strayer.edu/courses/17669/files/10300177?wrap=1) [Download Week 10 Assignment Template](https://canvas.strayer.edu/courses/17669/files/10300177/download?download_frd=1) and use it to complete this assignment.

    – Research the technology to solve the problem types detailed in the brief that are often encountered in corrections operations in the areas listed below.
    – Probationer monitoring and accountability.
    – Contraband detection and prevention in prisons.
    – Access control.
    – Officer/Staff safety.

    ### **Deliverable**

Make sure to consider and incorporate information from your readings, research, and the Corrections Challenges Briefing video into your work. Do the following for each of your chosen technologies:

    1. Correctly classify the tool and describe how its primary feature(s) and capabilities improve the performance, efficiency, effectiveness, and safety of probation/corrections operations.
    2. **Describe 3** accepted policies, rules, or best practices for the use of the technology.
    3. Provide an explanation of a significant (non-ethics-related) downside or concern regarding the technology that would effectively inform a decision to adopt it.
    4. Describe a primary ethical concern associated with your monitoring devices or system. Write at **least 3 responses** or talking points, that would effectively address the concern.

The juvenile justice system oversees adjudications for juvenile offenders in juvenile courts. A juvenile offender is a youth under the age of 18 or the age of majority, depending on state statute. A juvenile, or delinquent, is said to commit delinquent acts rather than crimes. This language is consistent with the primary goal of the juvenile system, which is rehabilitation, treatment, and successful reintegration into the community.

For the last 40 years, the United States Supreme Court has rendered several important cases affecting the constitutional rights, treatment, and adjudication of delinquents in the juvenile justice system.

Superior Electrical (Superior) was in the business of installing electrical wiring and related components at new construction sites. Because some employees were assigned company vehicles equipped with company tools and materials and were expected to drive those vehicles to the work sites, Superior required all employment applicants to hold a valid driver’s license. Employees who were assigned a company vehicle were expected to drive for the company during the workday in order to transport job materials and company tools that were kept on the vehicle to job sites. These employees were expected to take the company issued vehicle home at the end of the work day.

Superior hired Cory Jones as an apprentice electrician. Jones had completed an employment application in which he stated that he had a valid driver’s license and had not been cited for any traffic violations. These statements were untrue. His license had been suspended because of numerous traffic violations, including careless driving and driving without a license. Superior did not check on his driving record at the time he was hired because, as an apprentice electrician, he was not being assigned a company vehicle and was not expected to drive for the company during the work day.

About a year after hiring Jones, Superior promoted him to electrician and assigned Jones a company vehicle equipped with a rack for transporting wiring and other materials to and from the work sites. Superior intended that Jones drive during the day for the company and to take the vehicle home after the end of the work day. On a later date, when Jones’s work hours had ended and he was driving home in the company vehicle, he collided with two cars. The collision resulted solely from Jones’s negligence. Carolyn Carson and her son were severely injured in the collision and they sued Superior. The Carson’s alleged two theories of recovery against Superior: _respondeat superior_ and negligent hiring.

Write a four- to five-page paper (not including title and references pages) that addresses the following:

    – Identify and discuss the legal elements of negligent hiring.
    – Apply those elements of negligent hiring to the facts given in the case.
    – Analyze whether Superior would be liable for negligent hiring.
    – Identify and discuss the legal elements of _respondeat superior_.
    – Apply those elements of _respondeat superior_ to the facts given in the case.
    – Analyze whether Superior would be liable on _respondeat superior_ grounds.

    The Negligent Tort Liability assignment,

    – Must be four to five double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to [_APA Style_Links to an external site.](https://writingcenter.uagc.edu/apa-style) as outlined in the Writing Center’s [_APA Formatting for Microsoft Word_Links to an external site.](https://writingcenter.uagc.edu/apa-formatting-microsoft-word).
    – Must include a separate title page with the following:
    – Title of paper in bold font
    – Space should appear between the title and the rest of the information on the title page.
    – Student’s name
    – Name of institution

    – Instructor’s name

Evaluating criminal justice programs is essential for assessing their effectiveness, efficiency, and fairness, as stated by Vito and Higgins (2015). Through quantitative and qualitative data, evaluations help determine whether programs achieve their intended outcomes and whether resources are used appropriately. Independent evaluations reduce bias, provide objective insights into program successes and areas for improvement, and ensure accountability. They also safeguard ethical standards by informing participants of potential risks, obtaining informed consent, and respecting the right to withdraw. These practices promote transparency and protect vulnerable populations from harm, upholding the system's principles of justice and fairness. This is true in other fields I have researched, including Applied Behavior Analysis and Psychology.

Evaluations also play a crucial role in shaping policy formulation. Policymakers rely on evidence-based assessment to guide decisions, adjust, and scale successful programs or revise ineffective ones. This process helps to maintain public trust by demonstrating that the money is being used effectively. Moreover, evaluations ensure that criminal justice programs contribute to public safety, reduce recidivism, and foster community trust. Without such assessments, programs may operate ineffectively, fail to meet objectives, or inadvertently harm the very populations they aim to help. Ultimately, program evaluations ensure the criminal justice system is efficient and creates a safer environment.

As it is shown, evaluating criminal justice programs is crucial. While I wasn’t originally in the criminal justice field before starting this class, I’ve always had a strong interest in research and psychology. The foundations of both fields—fighting for equality, fairness, and ethics—are closely aligned. Just as psychologists aim to understand and support individuals in ways that promote well-being and justice, evaluating criminal justice programs ensures that policies and practices in the justice system serve the public fairly, ethically, and effectively. This shared commitment to fairness and ethical standards makes the evaluation process in criminal justice particularly meaningful and essential to me.
