ENG 106: Composition II Learning Unit 4: Instructions

    Informative Essay Outline Assignment

Overview: Now that you’ve had an opportunity to find and read sources and have gained some

instruction on MLA formatting and source integration, it’s time to start drafting your paper. The outline

is the first step in drafting the Informative Essay. After completing the outline, we will begin to write the

rough draft of the Informative Essay. Completing a preliminary outline will provide you with a plan for

your rough draft; in addition, the outline will give your instructor a chance to review your plans and your

structure for this essay. Your instructor will offer you feedback on your outline so that you may make

any necessary adjustments to your ideas and/or structure as you write the rough draft.

(Note: Be sure to review the Sample Student Informative Essay Outline and the lecture about writing the

    outline.)

    Instructions:

    1. Write a full thesis that explains the controversy as well as the competing sides of the

    controversy.

    2. Include a background section that contextualizes the main topics you will cover. The background

section may explain relevant history, definitions, and explanation of the controversy. In short,

include any information a reader would need to understand in order to comprehend the

    controversy.

    3. Map out the major arguments in favor of and against your topic. Be sure to write each argument

    out as a complete sentence.

 Use a block or point-by-point structure, if you choose. See the lecture for more information

    about these organizational patterns.

THIS IS THE FIRST PART OF YOUR ASSIGNMENT (The “PHISHING EMAIL). HERE IS

AN EXAMPLE (the red text is important/pertinent info for you):

    From: FIUIT (
    fiuittt@gmail.com)
Remember, you need to have where it looks like it’s comingfrom, as well as the *actual* address. It is very common in phishing attempts to have the emailcome from gmail or have a unique extension, such as “.info” instead of .com, .edu, .gov, etc.

    To: Faculty Listserv
    This would be your target(s)

    Subject: IMPORTANT NOTICE
(has to be catchy or no one will click the email)

    Body:
This is your “sell.” You need to write a short but threatening enough email so that peoplefeel they have no choice but to click the link and give the information to the hacker (in this case, that would be you).

    Dear Faculty,

We are aware of the major infiltration of our network here at FIUU and are very sad to tell you that all of your logon info is compromised. Kindly, click the link below to enter your credentials so that you may create a new account. If you do not click the link within 24 hours, your personal information will no longer be in the system and you will not be paid. Please act fast.

www.fiu.com/faculty_credential_update – This is the link I have created. You need to create onefor yourself that, again, looks real. However, you would notice that it is “fiu.com” and not“fiu.edu.”

    Reagrds,
    – Notice the spelling issues. These are also good signs that the email is a phishingattempt.

    FIU

This is the second part of your assignment. You need to address the questions outlined for you in the syllabus and under the assignment itself (they are the same, but you can look at either to see what you need to address). Remember, this portion can be double-spaced, but you need to answer each question satisfactorily. Please do not give me one sentence for why you think a certain group would be more likely to fall prey to your phishing attempt. Go into detail, do some

research (if needed). ABOVE ALL ELSE, DO NOT COPY A PHISHING ATTEMPT FROM THE WEB. Your assignments are checked for plagiarism (this includes information taken from the web). Get creative and have fun!

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

**Minor Project 1 – Information Technology Advancement and Economic Inequality**

Requirement 1: Analyze and consider the trends discussed in Chapter 4 of Richards. Has the development of Information Technology caused the gap between rich and poor to widen? Given your view is the trend likely to continue or change?

Requirement 2: Note that according to Barron’s 2017 list of the world’s twenty wealthiest people, 7 are technology executives (Bill Gates #1, Jeff Bezos #3, Mark Zuckerberg #5, Larry Ellison #7, Michael Bloomberg #10, Sergey Brin and Larry Paige tied at #12). Further, three of the top five are well-known technology pioneers. These wealthy individuals have value systems and worldviews that inform how they lead their companies and attempt to influence society. Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg gave commencement speeches that dealt in part with economic inequality. Compare and contrast their views and ideas, with your view of biblical teaching on the topic of inequality.

Requirement 3: Is economic inequality a new issue, now more acute, or is it as Solomon might say, not new under the sun (Eccl 1:9)?

Resources: The three primary resources for this project are:

    1. Richards (Money, Greed and God), particularly pages 83-110.
    2. New Living Bible (or other modern translation).
    3. Commencement speeches of Bill Gates (Harvard 2007), Mark Zuckerberg (Harvard 2017):
    1. [http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2017/05/mark-zuckerbergs-speech-as-written-for-harvards-class-of-2017/](http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2017/05/mark-zuckerbergs-speech-as-written-for-harvards-class-of-2017/)
    2. [http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2007/06/remarks-of-bill-gates-harvard-commencement-2007/](http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2007/06/remarks-of-bill-gates-harvard-commencement-2007/)

Please include additional references as you see fit.

Submissions should be between 1000 and 1200 words, plus references.
