Wk 1 – Learning from the Professionals

This assignment provides you an opportunity to learn from someone directly involved in
criminal law. Watch or read an interview with the goal to learn something new and correct
any of your misconceptions about criminal law.

You have an interview for a position as a paralegal with a local law firm. As part of your
preparation, you want to learn about criminal law from the perspective of an active
participant, so you are looking on the internet for a video or written interview to help you
better understand this area of law. You are seeking as much help as possible to be
prepared to answer questions posed in your job interview.

Locate and review a written or taped interview that was conducted with either a judge,
attorney or prosecutor active in criminal law.

Write a 350- to 525-word summary of your reflections from the interview. Address the
    following questions:

    • What did you learn? (For example, consider what you may have learned about
criminal law, the concept of crime, and criminal liability.)

    • What surprised you?

    • What impact did the interview have on your views of criminal law? What views were
reinforced? Were any of your perspectives changed?

    • In answering these points, be specific as to what was said in the interview

Cite the source of the interview. The name and title of the person interviewed must appear
in the body of the paper. There must also be in-text cites referring to the source of the
interview and a source listed in the reference section.

Format your summary according to APA guidelines in a Microsoft Word document attached
    to the assignment tab.

Community Diversion Program is the program used in the previous assignment

    Assignment 2

As  you have learned through your course readings and classroom discussion,  logic models may be used as a valuable tool in both the planning and  evaluation of programs.  For this assignment, you will create a 1-page  logic model, which will be used as a tool to plan an evaluation of a  criminal justice program.

All components of the logic model need to be included including **inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes**. Since this logic model is intended to aid in the planning of a program evaluation, please also **include a column delineating your methods of assessment for each outcome listed**.   Several computer applications can be used to assist in developing the  logic model figure including PowerPoint, Lucid Chart (lucidchart.com),  Microsoft Excel, and Word. You may also find some helpful resources from  the Kellogg Foundation  https://wkkf.issuelab.org/resource/logic-model-development-guide.html.

    **ASSIGNMENT 3**

For this assignment, you should **build on previous assignments and discussion postings to create a comprehensive program evaluation plan**.  Using the program (Community Diversion Program) you have identified in assignments #1 and #2, discuss  the following aspects in detail:  description of the program and  population served, activities of the program, program outcomes, the  theoretical basis for the program, selected evaluation model, sources of  data, methods of data collection and analysis, and your plan for  reporting/disseminating the evaluation findings.  You should provide a  rationale for all of your choices, with literature to support them when  appropriate.  Please be sure to also include a discussion of ethical  considerations and your plan for communicating with program staff and  stakeholders throughout all phases of the evaluation. Your paper should  be between 6 to 8 pages. When citing the literature, **please remember to follow APA style**.

Please use the following headings in your paper to improve organization and ensure all required areas are discussed:

    – **Program Description** (Including a description of the program, population served, activities of the program, and program expected outcomes)
    – **Evaluation Preparation**  (Including theoretical basis for the program, selected evaluation model  or framework, Logic Model, sources of data, and methods of data  collection/analysis)
    – **Evaluation Reporting**  (Including Reporting/dissemination of the evaluation findings, ethical  considerations, and communication to staff and stakeholders)

The Drug Court Program is part of the community criminal justice program. The Drug Court Program is a well-known criminal justice program in my area. It is meant to be an option to jail time for nonviolent offenders who have problems with drugs. This program works with the court system and helps people who are addicted to drugs by giving them organized treatment plans, supervision, and rehabilitation services. Drug courts try to keep people from breaking the law again by focusing on treatment instead of penalties. This leads to long-term recovery and less stress on the criminal justice system (Mitchell et al., 2017).

    Mission and Goals
The Drug Court Program's goal is to make the community safer and cut down on drug-related crimes by giving criminals a chance to get better through court-supervised treatment. The program helps nonviolent offenders who have problems with drugs by giving them access to therapy, medical care, and job training.

    These are the goals:
Getting convicts to stop abusing drugs as a reason for their criminal behavior in order to keep them from getting arrested again. Promoting Rehabilitation: Encouraging long-term sobriety by providing a wide range of care and support services. Marlowe et al. (2016) say that organized and supervised drug rehabilitation can help make communities safer by lowering drug-related crimes.

Program Results That Can Be Measured
In order to figure out how well the Drug Court Program works; you should look at these three measured results:

Repetition Rate Reduction: Keeping track of how many times program members are arrested within one to three years of finishing the program to see how well it worked at keeping people from committing crimes again.
Substance Use Reduction: Testing participants for drugs on a daily basis during and after the program to see what percentage of them stay sober.
Employment and Social Stability: Looking at the number of program members who get and keep a job or stable housing after the program ends, which shows long-term rehabilitation success (Marlowe, 2018). The Drug Court Program can make sure it works to reduce drug-related crimes and make the lives of its participants better by focusing on these results.

I am originally from Toronto, Ontario. There are quite a few criminal justice programs in my community but the one I will be discussing today will be the John Howard Society of Toronto, which runs the Crossroads Youth Program (CYP). This program was designed and set up to help the youth in Toronto, and help keep them out of trouble with the law. It is primarily focused on those who come from minority backgrounds. It also gives a focus to African-Caribbean youth, youth who are of age 16 and older, and those who are at a higher risk of getting involved in crime, due to things like poverty, discrimination, and lack of support. The program is designed to help with mentorship, one on one guidance, and still having youth partake in culturally relevant activities, to help the youth and younger people make better choices. It is also a way to help support their families and communities to help foster and create a more safer and positive environment (John Howard Society of Toronto, n.d.).

Many youth in Toronto, especially those who come from marginalized communities, are consistently overrepresented in the criminal justice system. CYP is set up to help tackle this problem. They assist by giving the youth the tools and support that they need to succeed and excel. This is done through education, job training, or even personal development. The main focus and goal of all this is to work to reduce crime by addressing the root causes, rather than being focused on punishing young offenders (John Howard Society of Toronto, n.d.). Research has also shown that community based intervention programs are a lot more effective than punitive measures in reducing youth crime (Boldt, 2019).

The mission and goals of the program are focused on helping people turn their lives around and be able to create safer communities. The mission lays in the empowerment of those who are involved in the justice system to make positive changes (John Howard Society of Toronto, n.d.). The CYP program is able to fit this into their mission by helping at risk youth find better paths, whether it is through school, work, or personal growth. They also help by providing culturally relevant programs, this is to help address some of the unique challenges and hurdles faced by African-Caribbean youth. And bringing a focus on families and communities, so that the root issues are combatted, and young people have a strong positive environment to grow in.

I believe that to see if the program is being implemented correctly, or even working, three outcomes should be focused on and the program should incorporate and assess. That includes lower re offending rates. By tracking how many youth are able to stay out of trouble after completing the program. By measuring and keeping track of the numbers, if fewer people who were part of the program end up back in the system, that is also a sign of success. Another outcome of this program includes better education and job opportunities. By constantly checking in and seeing how many participants of the program are going back to school or getting  jobs after completion of the program is vital. If more youth are on a stable path, and working towards change and betterment of themselves, that means the program is working and making a difference. Another outcome of this program can include stronger family and community support. This can be measured through seeing how many families and community members continue to stay involved and help and support these young people. By having a stronger family and community support, this strong support system helps youth stay on track as well (Public Safety Canada, 2020).

By focusing on these goals, the Crossroads Youth Program can help at-risk youth turn their lives around and make Toronto a safer place for everyone.

    **Instructions**

Select a scholarly (peer-reviewed) journal article (no older than 2018) relevant to Homeland Security or Homeland Defense from the APUS Online Library. You will conduct an article review of that scholarly journal article. It must be related to the course or course materials but should not be one of the provided course readings. The intent is for students to do some external research away from the provided references and find an article in the APUS Online Library. Students should search the library's online databases, such as ProQuest, EbscoHost, and others, to find scholarly or peer-reviewed articles. Web addresses, blogs, news sites, magazines, and testimonies are not scholarly. Stick to what you find in one of the journal search engines in the library, and not what you find when you do a simple search on the Internet.

Additionally, the review of the journal article is an evaluation of the article's strengths, weaknesses, and validity. You will use this to decide the article’s value through your explanation, interpretation, and analysis. Use the required elements below as headings in your paper.

    · Introduction

    · Analysis (that covers the following:)

    1. The purpose of this article – identify the article you are reviewing in this section.

    2. Why it is important to investigate or examine the subject of the article – including the research question/topic.

    3. How the author answers the research question – discuss the research design and theoretical framework in the article).

    4. What the author claims to have found out – are the findings clearly stated?

    5. How does the author advance knowledge in the field?

    · A conclusion that summarizes the main ideas

    **Technical Requirements**

    · Your paper must be at a minimum of 5 pages (Title and Reference pages do not count towards the minimum limit).

    · A peer-reviewed journal article must be used.

    · You may use other references but only to support the review of the primary journal article.

    · Limit your use of direct quotations.

    · Type in Times New Roman, 12 point, and double space.

    · Students will follow the current APA Style as the sole citation and reference style used in written work submitted as part of coursework.

    · Points will be deducted for the use of Wikipedia or encyclopedic-type sources if used to support your review of the primary journal article.

    · All submissions will be graded using the assignment rubric.

    **Instructions**

    · Students will follow the current APA Style as the sole citation and reference style used in written work submitted as part of coursework.
