Unit 8 Assignment Directions: Project 3: Paper for Cybersecurity Conference

Read the scenario and then write a white paper that follows all the steps listed below. For more information on writing [white papers](https://www.investopedia.com/terms/w/whitepaper.asp "white papers"), visit the [UMGC Library Writing Center](https://www.umgc.edu/current-students/learning-resources/writing-center "UMGC Library Writing Center").

    Scenario

Your company requires you to present a white paper at a cybersecurity conference. The conference can be local, national, or international (e.g., InfoSec World, IEEEs Symposium on Security and Policy, or National Cyber Summit).

The following outlines the steps necessary to create a white paper focusing on ransomware security planning and risk management for a specific company that has been attacked.

    Steps

    – **Research:**
    – Review       recent ransomware incidents, responses, and outcomes.
    – Choose one       company within an industry (e.g., healthcare, finance, education,       technology, services, or retail) that has been attacked (e.g., the ICBC       Bank attack in 2023).
    – **Paper      Structure:**
    – **Abstract       (100-150 words)**: Briefly       summarize the paper's purpose and key points.
    – **Current       State/Risk Analysis:**
    – Discuss        your chosen company by providing details about the company including its        mission statement, status as a private or public entity, its size, and        any global considerations.
    – Discuss        the growing threat of ransomware with statistics.
    – Analyze        the vulnerabilities to ransomware of your chosen company's industry.
    – Explain        the specific ransomware attack on your chosen company.
    – **Security       Requirements:**
    – Describe,        if possible, the security mechanisms the company had before the attack.
    – Recommend        three significant security goals for the company based on industry        standards.
    – Address        the CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) for the        company.
    – **Recommended       Controls:**
    – Explain        specific controls to implement for each security goal you listed.
    – **Accountability:**
    – Assign        security plan responsibilities to specific company departmental or team        titles (for example, the incident response team).
    – Discuss        employee roles and responsibilities within the security plan.
    – **Timetable:**
    – Provide a        general timeline for implementing the security plan.
    – **Maintenance:**
    – Discuss        how often to review the plan and update equipment/software.
    – Briefly        mention any employee training and management support required for the        security plan.
    – **Legal       Considerations:**
    – Discuss        intellectual property and employee/employer rights related to the        security plan.
    – Identify a        relevant law (e.g., HIPAA) the company should consider.
    – **Ethical       Concerns:**
    – Discuss        the use of AI and its impact on the plan.
    – Address        ethical concerns with employee monitoring, whistleblowing, and privacy.
    – **Policy       Examples:**
    – Generate        at least three security policies and provide justifications for each.
    – Briefly        discuss policy-enforcement methods.
    – **Conclusion:**
    – Summarize        your proposed security plan for the chosen company.

    Requirements

    – Your paper      should be 10—12 pages in length not including the title page or      references.
    – Include:
    – A Title       page, with your name
    – An Abstract       on the second page
    – A       References section
    – Ensure you      have used professional wording and have written with clarity for the      client in mind.
    – Use in-text      citations in the paper to support your points.
    – Follow APA 7      format for the entire paper, including references and citations.

    Submission

    – Review the      Unit 8 Project 3 Grading Rubric to understand how you will be assessed on      this assignment.

    **## Overview.docx**

    **Overview**

For this assignment, you will select a company that is willing to share their security assessment and security plan with you. Your task is to write a 500 to 1000 word essay analyzing the risks identified by the company and evaluating the effectiveness of their security measures in addressing those risks. Additionally, using resources from the Online Library, provide suggestions or recommendations on what could be done differently to enhance the company's security posture.

    **Scenario**

You have been granted access to the security assessment and security plan of a selected company (ensure they are willing to share this information). The company operates in a sector of your choice (e.g., healthcare, finance, technology). Your goal is to thoroughly review their documentation to identify potential risks to their information assets and assess the adequacy of their current security measures. Consider aspects such as data protection, network security, access controls, incident response procedures, and compliance with relevant regulations.

    **Prompt**

Write a 500-word essay based on your analysis of the security assessment and security plan provided by the selected company. In your essay:

    1.
**Identify Risks**: Describe the key risks to the company's information assets as identified in their security assessment. Discuss the potential impact of these risks on the organization's operations, reputation, and compliance obligations.

    2.
**Evaluate Security Measures**: Assess the effectiveness of the company's current security measures in mitigating the identified risks. Discuss strengths and weaknesses in their approach to information security based on the provided documentation.

    3.
**Recommendations for Improvement**: Utilizing resources from the Online Library, propose specific recommendations on how the company could enhance their security posture. Consider technologies, policies, procedures, or training initiatives that could address gaps or strengthen existing controls.

    4.
**Conclusion**: Summarize your findings and emphasize the importance of proactive information security practices for organizations operating in today's digital landscape. Reflect on the evolving nature of cybersecurity threats and the need for continuous improvement in security strategies.

Ensure your essay is well-structured, supported by evidence from the company's security documentation, and supplemented with credible sources from the Online Library to justify your recommendations. This assignment aims to demonstrate your understanding of practical security assessment and planning concepts while critically evaluating real-world security practices.

    **What to Submit**

    · Your submission should be a 1 to 2 page Word document with 12 point Times New Roman font, double spacing, and one-inch margins.

    · There should be two sources minimum to include the course textbook.

    · Sources should be cited according to APA Style, as this should include in-text citations and a dedicated Reference page.

    Learning Topic

    IEEE
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Style

is a system for referencing sources that you have quoted, paraphrased, or

    summarized in your writing.

IEEE (pronounced “I-triple-E") style is widely used within branches of

engineering, computer science, and cyber disciplines.

Citing and documenting your sources, whether quoted, paraphrased or

summarized, is an important part of your research and writing.

It strengthens the credibility of your work by demonstrating that you have

done quality research and giving credit to the original author for his or her

    ideas [1].

    Citing and Documenting Sources

Like APA and MLA formats, IEEE format is a two-part system of in-text

citations throughout the text and a full list of references at the end of a

    document.

    In-Text Citations

In-text citations are shown as bracketed numbers and numbered in the

order they are cited. The first cited reference is [1], the second cited

    reference is [2], etc.

Some examples of what in-text citations might look like:

“As of 2020, there were more than one million registered product users

    [4].”

"The results of several metanalyses [9], [10], [11] indicate that…."

    Reference List

The list of bibliographical entries at the back of the document is called

“References” as in APA or MLA style, but its organization differs. Rather than

list the entries alphabetically by author last name, IEEE lists them in order of

their appearance throughout the text with a column of the bracketed

citation numbers flush to the left margin.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

A large portion of our computing professional careers is invested in reading and reviewing

technical articles. It is a critical skill for us to learn how to read these articles and look for and

extract critical elements that will add to our knowledge.

    INSTRUCTIONS

Use the Article Review Template to prepare your Article Review Assignment. Submit your

Article Review Assignment via the assignment submission link. Before starting review the

research guide found in the readings on how to conduct research.

You should review the Article Review Example prior to completing the article review.

Additionally, you have been provided an Article Review Template to help you complete the

assignment. Use the provided template. Making your own format or using a template you may

have found on the Internet often results in your losing points for missing required content.

    Tasks:

    1. Select a peer-reviewed article—generally one that has an author and date. Blogs would

    not be acceptable.

    2. Remember, Wikipedia is not a valid source. However, it is a potential search tool

as it lists peer-reviewed articles in the bibliographic section

    3. The Bibliographic Reference at the top of the template must contain the proper

APA reference for only the article being reviewed

    4. If you use external references in your narrative, they must be added to the end and

properly contain both in-text citations and Reference citations—in APA format

    5. Attach the Word file (appropriately named) in the assignment link

    6. Do not quote from the article. Instead, summarize and paraphrase. You must use your

    own words.

    Grading Tips:

    1. Be sure to review the criteria on the Article Review Grading Rubric prior to beginning

    this assignment.

    2. To maximize your grade on this assignment

    a. Submit on time

    b. Select a good article on the assigned topic

    c. Respond to all template areas with complete and proper paragraphs

    d. Paragraphs are at least 5 sentences. This makes a proper paragraph.

    e. Use the template correctly

    i. Remove highlighted areas

    ii. Save by correct name

iii. Do not change the general format

    f. Check spelling and grammar

Article Review: Future of Computer Science Assignment

Topic: Search for an article discussing the future of AI, cybersecurity, databases, data analytics,

    or eCommerce.

    1. You must complete a references page.

    2. After completing this article review, submit it through this submission link.

    3. Attach the document as a Word document. Any other formats will not be accepted for

    grading.

Concepts and Applications of Information Technology (IFSM201)

    Class Project

    Purpose of this Assignment

The Class Project is the most significant assignment in this course, Concepts and Applications of

Information Technology. As such, it accounts for 58% of the course points. This assignment is

comprised of two deliverables: a SWOT Analysis and a Presentation. The SWOT Analysis is due

in Week 4 (worth 33% of course grade), and the Presentation is due in Week 8 (worth 25% of

    course grade).

This assignment gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to research, evaluate,
and describe business strategy focused on information technology tools and services. This
assignment specifically addresses the following course outcomes:

    • Identify the basic components of the information system: hardware, software, data,
processes, and people, and how these components are used to support strategic
    decision making.

    • Apply information technology tools for research, data gathering and information
analysis, problem-solving, decision-making, and communicating information that aligns
    with business needs and objectives.

    Start Here

The Class Project for this course focuses on the evaluation of a business or organization and
how they might strengthen their operations through technology, including their information
systems. There are two parts to the Class Project: the SWOT Analysis and the Presentation. You
will use the same business/organization for both parts; however, the grade received on the
SWOT Analysis will not affect the grade for the Presentation (they are separate assignments).

Step 1: Choose a Business or Organization
To begin, choose a business or organization that you would like to evaluate – it can be where
you work, a school (UMGC), a place of worship, government entity (e.g., DMV, Secretary of
State, courthouse, etc.), or any other type of organization. Since the focus of the analysis will
involve information technology, the best type of organization to choose is one where you can
envision technology playing a key role in improving products, processes, or services.

*From this point on, the instructions focus on the second deliverable, the Presentation*

Step 2: The Presentation (due week 8)
Now that you have chosen a business or organization for your Class Project and completed the SWOT
Analysis, it is time to complete the second deliverable – the Presentation. As you demonstrated, the
SWOT analysis is a framework for identifying and analyzing an organization's strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats — SWOT stands for: Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat. Commonly
used by businesses, this tool focuses on factors that are important to strategic decision making. These
factors include both internal and external influences on the viability of the organization.

The Presentation is a methodology for illustrating and explaining information to stakeholders in an
organization. You will use the Microsoft PowerPoint tool to create a presentation for the leadership of
the organization you chose for this Project. The SWOT Analysis you did provides the context for the
presentation, and you will use the attributes you identified in your SWOT Table to justify the
recommendations you will make for improvements to the organization.

The goal of the Presentation is to inform your audience, the senior leadership of the organization, of
the internal and external factors most critical to the health of the organization, and recommend
alternatives based on Information Technology that can help mitigate weaknesses and threats.

    week 8 Content:

    • PowerPoint: Managing Slides

Step 3: Create the PowerPoint Presentation
Now that you have completed a SWOT Analysis on the organization you chose, it is time to create a
PowerPoint presentation that will be submitted to your instructor/classroom.
The presentation should include the following and be a minimum of 10-12 slides in length (not including
    Title or Reference slides):

    1. Title slide – the title of presentation, company/organization name, your name, course,
    and date of submission.

    2. Purpose – briefly describe the purpose of the presentation and a summary of the
organization, including the business the organization is in (e.g., retail, production,
    technology services, education, etc.)

    3. SWOT Findings – 6-7 slides including a slide with the SWOT Table you created. Use
slides and notes to explain the business’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as the
opportunities and threats it faces in the marketplace. In addition to the SWOT Table,
each quadrant (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) should have its own slide
and in-depth Notes. Last, answer the question: how are the strengths, weaknesses,
    opportunities, and threats interconnected?

    4. Focus on Information Systems – 2-3 slides describing recommendations based on the
SWOT analysis; how can the information system components (hardware, software, data,
people, processes) contribute to overcoming external barriers and bettering the health
    of the organization?

    [PowerPoint:%20Managing%20Slides](powerpoint:%20Managing%20Slides)

    5. Summary/Conclusion – synthesize the presentation – what were the most important
    points?

    6. References – cite at least two resources with APA formatted citation and reference. a.
Remember to correctly cite and reference all sources. Any direct quotes should be
indicated within the slide text with appropriate quotation marks and an in-text citation
(however, direct quotes should be short and used sparingly, if at all). Complete
references for sources should be included in the corresponding Notes section.
Paraphrased material can just be referenced within the Notes section of the slides
without an in-text citation on the slide. This deviates from APA style but keeps the slides
    more readable.

*ALL Slides MUST Have Notes – provide a comprehensive explanation of what is on the slide.
Since there is no oral presentation, the Notes serve to explain what the audience sees on the
    slide*

The bullet points in your presentation will be supported by relevant details in the Notes section of
the slides, which contain the actual words you would say to the stakeholders as you present each
slide. Since you cannot present the slides in person, the Notes will show what you would say. This is
an important part of your presentation. Presentations with limited or no “Notes” will receive much
lower grades because the bullets cannot tell the whole story.

Tips for a good PowerPoint Presentation:

    • Include relevant graphics, including the SWOT Table.

    • Each slide should have a title and a limited amount of text. The presentation should
capture key bullet points and not include complete paragraphs and detailed text. The Notes
feature will provide that explanations/narration for what the audience sees on the slide.

    • There are options in PowerPoint to make a presentation stylish and unordinary, including
background colors, but keep it professional looking – remember your audience.

    • Font size should be readable, as in at least 16 point and good contrast with background.

    • Use animations sparingly to enhance your presentation.

    • Keep Your Slides Simple.

    • Proofread and Spellcheck (including what you write in the Notes section)!
