Paul Nolting and then answer the questions.

    Word Count: 200

Purpose: Use experiences of success that translate to learning
    math.

    Putting Math into Perspective

One way to change the way you learn math is to compare it to one of your favorite hobbies or
extracurricular activities.  The following activities all relate to math in fundamental ways.

    Math as a puzzle

Have you ever tried to put together a puzzle with one or more of the pieces missing?  It becomes
frustrating, especially if you think all the parts are there and, after hours and hours of work, the
realize you won’t be able to finish.  Puzzles are fickle that way.  Each piece is crucial.  If even a
single piece is missing, you are left with an incomplete picture.  This is also true when you are
halfway through a math problem and find out you don’t know or have forgotten the rules for the

next step.  In order to solve math problems, you need to understand all the rules.  In other subjects,
you may forget some of the rules and still pass a test.  In math, however, not knowing or forgetting
one major concept often causes you to miss problems.

    Math as a Foreign Language

Another way to study math is to treat is as a foreign language.  Like a foreign language, math has
unfamilir vocabulary words, which must be put in sentences called expressions or equations.
Understanding and solving math problems is simimlar to speaking and undersntading a sentence
in a foreign language.  When read or spoken aloud, mathematical symbols are translated into
words and sentences.  If you don’t understand the symbols, you are in serious trouble.Learning
how to speak math as a language is key to success.  With this in mind, to stay fluent in a foreign
language, you need to use it every day.  Math is no different.

    Math as a Sport

Learning math is similar to learning to play a sport such as basketball, track or football.  In order to
find success, you must actively practice.  You can listen and watch your coach all day, but unless
you practice those skills yourself, you will not learn and probably won’t even get into the game or
    meet.

For example, in basketball, the way to improve our free-throw percentage is to watch and
understand the correct shooting form and then to actively practice the shots.  If you simply listen to
your coach describe it, but you do not practice the correct form yourself, you will never improve.

    Math as a Musical Instrument

Learning math is like playing a musical instrument. To master a musical instrument, you need to
understand music theory and learn the various hand-eye movements required to strike the right
sound and tone.  This involved lots of practice.  You can watch someone play the piano, cello or
electric guitar, watch their hands and hear the sounds, but unless you practice you will not learn
how to play.  Imagine how many concerts you have attended or seen on TV, or how many people
you have watched play the guitar.  Could you now go and play it?  No.  You need to practice before
you can play well just like you have to practice math before you learn math.

Many of your other college courses can be learned by methods other than practicing.  In social
studies, for example, you can learn information by listening to your instructor, taking good notes
and participating in class discussions.  Many college students mistakenly believe they can
    approach math the same way.

    Questions to answer
    1. Which one of the comparisons is the most relatable to you? Choose one of the comparisons

and explain how you can use it to improve your study habits.

    [**This is My Life Paper**](https://bb.oc.edu/webapps/assignment/uploadAssignment?content_id=_1902676_1&course_id=_35052_1&group_id=&mode=view)

The student is expected to write a paper about their own story and how their life story might fit into the big story of God's redemptive plan. The purpose of this work is for the student to articulate how their personal calling fits within what matters most to them and what are the most important things that need to happen in the world. The paper should be 5-6 pages, double-spaced, with standard font and margins. Research beyond the course readings and materials is not necessary, but please cite any sources referenced using a recognizable format such as Chicago, MLA, etc. A good paper will show evidence of preparation and engagement with the readings; it will be organized and easy to follow; it will be free from grammatical errors; it will accomplish objectives stated. The student can base their paper on the following outline below.

    – **Summary Sentence** – The student should write a one sentence summarizing their calling.  Set that sentence off from the rest of the text in some way that looks good to the student.

    – **What’s Most Important:** A brief summary, in the students own words, of what are the most important things going on in the world and why these things matter. Consider the following questions:

    1. Based on what the student has learned in this class, what does the Christian story portray as the most important work going on in the world right now?2. What does the student believe is the most important work going on in the world right now?3. What is the student most hopeful about the future of humanity?4. What is the student most worried about the future of humanity?

    – **My Calling**

Calling refers to the students personal mission. Although a calling may line up with someone's job, it is bigger than any one job as it can be lived out in multiple ways.  To help prepare yourself to write up this section about your calling, work through these questions first:

    1. What are the top three things the student is most passionate about?

    2. What is the student most proud of accomplishing?

    3. What does the student find most joy in doing?

    4. What have wise and reliable people said about the students' gifts, abilities and passions?

    5. What are the students' values and goals in life?

Now, the student should consider how their interests and talents can benefit the world around them.  Consider the following questions:

    1. What does the student wish God or the government or someone would fix in the world?

    2. What needs in the world can the students' talents help meet?

    3. Can the students' interests and talents be useful in what they think is the most important work being done in the world right now?

    4. How do the students see their interests and talents making things better for me and my family?

    5. How do the students see my interests and talents making things better for others?

    – **My Career:** A brief description of how the student hopes their job and career will help them play their part in God’s purpose and mission for the world. Consider the following questions:

    1. What are the things their career does to make life and the life of their family better?

    2. What are the things their career does to make the lives of others better?

    3. What are the things about their career they can be most proud of?

    4. How does evil get into and distort their career sometimes?

    5. Are there systematic ways their career gets caught up with making the world a worse place?

    6. What can the students do to better align their career with God's redemptive plan?

    **## personalitysummary.docx**

For this assignment, you will write a paper no less than 7 pages in length, not including the required title and Reference pages, describing a single personality theory from the course readings that best explains your personality and life choices. You are free to select from among the several theories covered in the course to date but
**only one theory** may be used.

Your task is to demonstrate your knowledge of the theory you choose via descriptions of its key concepts and use them to explain how you developed your personality. It is recommended that you revisit the material covered to date to refresh your knowledge of theory details. This is a "midterm" assignment and you should show in your work that you have
**studied and comprehended the first four weeks of course material**. Your submission should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins on all sides of each page and should be free of spelling and grammar errors. It must include source crediting of any materials used in APA format, including source citations in the body of your paper and a Reference list attached to the end. Easy-to-follow guides to APA formatting can be found in the tutorial section of the APUS Online Library.

    Your paper will include
_three_ parts and should therefore be structured with at least
    [_three APA formatted subheadings_](https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/apa_headings_and_seriation.html):

**I.** A brief description of the premise and key components of the theory you selected. You should be thorough and concise in this section and not spend the bulk of the paper detailing the theory, but rather just give enough of a summary of the key points so that an intelligent but uninformed reader would be able to understand its basics. If you pick a more complicated theory, you should expect explaining its premise and key components to take longer than explaining the same for one of the simpler theories but, in either case, focus on the basics and keep in mind that a paper that is almost all theory description and little use of the theory described to explain your personality will receive a significant point deduction as will the reverse case of the paper being largely personal experience sharing with little linkage to clearly described key theory components.

**II.** A description of how your chosen theory explains your personality and life choices with supporting examples.

**III**. A description of the limitations of the theory in explaining your personality or anyone else's.
