    #### Intro

We've learned about ocean acidification, its causes, and some of its impacts on sea urchins and other marine organisms. Now it's time to act to do something about it!

But ocean acidification is a massive global problem – how can we as individuals hope to do anything about it?

    ![](https://www.sweetstudy.com/questions/davis)

The good news is that there's A LOT we can do to address ocean acidification here in our own communities!

    1. WE can act locally to reduce local stressors on the marine environment;
    2. WE can learn from and help empower sentinel communities that are feeling the greatest impacts of ocean acidification, while forging ahead to find solutions; and
    3. WE can each undertake efforts to build solutions from "me to we";

Yes we can! Let's get started!

**What effects would these changes in sea urchin populations have on organisms –like sea otters– that depend on urchins for food?**

**…or on other animals and algae in the sea urchin food web?**

In other words, the extent to which ocean acidification can threaten sea urchin colonies and their implications for existing food chains is significant. The sea animals that depend on sea urchin for food would suffer hunger and a decline in their numbers, especially sea otters. This could have chain reactions since sea otters are major predators of sea urchins which are significant in marine ecosystems. Should this occur, the remaining sea otters will ride the back of the surviving urchins and possibly cause the destruction of kelp forests. The areas that will be lost are kelp forests which are home and food to many sea creatures meaning that if lost, the variation in sea creatures will go down and the dynamics of the seas will change. In general, it is evident that the various aspects of the health of the marine ecosystem would be impacted, as well as numerous specific species and the relations between them.

**We don’t know enough to answer these questions right now. But we do know this: if we don’t curb CO2 emissions soon, we are likely going to find out!**

**Do you want to find out, or should we try to stop this “experiment” before it goes too far?**

CO2 emissions, especially those that are unrestrained, stand to cause severe and possibly irreversible effects on oceanic acidification. Is it for each of us to face these ramifications or for us to do all that is within our powers to stop this “experiment” from carrying on as planned? There is no question that the choice is necessary and it is now critical.

**You will recall that this level of pH drop could very well happen this century, depending on how quickly we can curb greenhouse gas emissions.**

    **So what?**

It has been projected that if ocean pH decreases this century because of unabated greenhouse gas emissions, the consequences will be very bad for marine life; particularly calcifiers that form reefs composed of calcium carbonate like corals, mollusks, and certain kinds of plankton. This is brought about by a reduction in pH levels of water hence causing decreased shell and skeletal density in the flora and fauna thus leading to falls in population densities and distortion of the marine systems and food pyramids. Overall, the prospects of losing the coral reefs would be detrimental to the chances of increasing the number of species, as well as in providing a barrier against coastal storms. Similarly, the chances of losing the shellfish species would have negative net effects such as a direct threat to the fisher industry. Rapid changes in pH also demonstrate a broad threat to the entire ocean's carbon buffering capacity promoting climate change consequences and compromising the stability of the global environment.

    4.

Brandon Kirk's story is a fine example of the immediate effects of climate change on his farm in Georgia; the major problems that Kirk points to are flooding and drought. Education is the theme that he offers in his volunteering with a farming organization, the Cobb County Farm Bureau, to nurture the young generation in fighting this problem. The following points are worth noting when considering the application of scenario thinking to climate change: This brings out the fact that climate change is a reality that must be combatted now. Some of how people can contribute include, that one can minimize his/her use of the products that are affecting the environment, advocating for changes in policy, and educate others on the effects. These effects are real and have been caused by various activities we partake in as human beings; however, through collaboration, we must address the issue and ensure that our oceans do not get more acidic for future generations.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    ## **Overview**

In Week 7 you created a report to design an ethical audit. The next step, in this assignment, is to create and implement an ethical action plan.

    ## **Scenario**

QuantumNet Innovations is a well-established tech firm that prides itself on innovation and diversity in the workplace. As an HR manager for the company, you recently submitted a report recommending the design of an ethical audit to gather data regarding alleged discrimination at the company. Now that the audit is over, leadership has tasked you with creating and implementing an ethical action plan for the company.

    ## **Instructions**

Address the following in a 5-6 page report to company leadership:

    1. Write a 4-5 sentence summary of the discriminatory issue the plan will address. ( _Note: Refer to the audit report you created in Week 7._)
    2. Using the data from your Week 7 ethical audit report, identify at least 5 categories of data to address in your ethical action plan and explain why you selected this data. ( _Note: You can make all necessary assumptions or inferences to apply the data to the given scenario_.)
    3. Based on the data and presumed audit findings, develop a comprehensive ethical action plan with four specific recommendations to address the discrimination issue identified. Prioritize actionable steps that can be taken to mitigate bias, promote inclusivity, and create a more diverse and equitable work environment.
    4. Determine three actions that organizational leadership can take to support the plan based on the following categories:
    – Leading by example to create a culture of respect and equality.
    – Holding individuals accountable for discriminatory behavior.
    5. Determine three ways the proposed actions in this plan can improve stakeholder perspectives and trust in the company leadership. Support your response with specific evidence.
    6. Recommend a policy or guideline to monitor progress, track key metrics, and follow up on the implementation of recommended actions.
    7. Propose two ways the company can regularly review and evaluate the impact of interventions to ensure sustained progress in preventing discrimination.

Provide a minimum of **3 quality academic resources** in addition to utilizing information from your weekly readings and media content.

    Module 4 – Case

    **Database Systems and Knowledge Base**

    **Assignment Overview**

The Case Assignment for this module considers the emerging and important trend toward what is called "open-source software." The Background Information contains material regarding this movement; its effect is being felt in many different areas of information technology, both operating systems and applications. The area of database management has long been dominated by large-scale applications from companies such as SAP and Oracle. Under these conditions, you either buy the entire suite, which commits you to a single approach and offers you in return a single interface, or you buy nothing. Open-source software allows firms and new startups with little funding—especially those in emerging economies in Africa and Central America—to have access to software to improve their business operations.

The open-source movement has been a breath of fresh air in many areas of computer systems development, not just databases. The idea is fairly simple if somewhat counterintuitive: Give away your product to make money. The odd part is, it works, at least part of the time. What it amounts to is that by making the core source code of major applications common knowledge, you encourage people to build on that, and the more applications and specific tools people build on it, the more you have the opportunity to create a critical mass of users and uses of that software. The Unix operating system pioneered the approach and had become dominant in middle ware systems.

In this module, we look at the issue of open-source applications in database management.

MySql has become a dominate open-source database and there are others. Companies such as Oracle and SAP bundle their database software with Enterprise software to fund the business. However, Enterprise software is moving to open source and on the cloud such as ERPNext.

Since companies are moving in this direction, open-source warrants attention, particularly in developing countries in Africa and Central America and business startups with little cash. Open source can enable diverse business owners to have access to the open-source tools they need to run their business.

    **Case Assignment**

After reviewing the module materials, please write a short (3- to 5-page) paper discussing the question:

**Why is open-source software dominating database management tools in developing countries such as Africa and Central America? What benefits do open-source database tools bring to these diverse business owners? Do you also see this shift to open-source in the other parts of the world as well? Can a large company run its infrastructure with an open-source database?**

Your paper should be between three and five pages. Take a definite stand on the issues to develop your supporting argument carefully. Using material from the background information and any other sources you can find to support specific points in your argument is highly recommended; avoid making assertions for which you can find no support other than your own opinion.

Your paper is to be structured as a point/counterpoint argument, in the following manner:

    · Begin the paper by stating your position on the questions clearly and concisely.

    · Citing appropriate sources, present the reasons why you take this position. Be sure to make the most effective case you can.

    · Then present the best evidence you can—again citing appropriate sources—
**against** your position; that is, establish what counterarguments can be made to your original position.

    · Finally, review your original position in light of the counterarguments, showing how they are inadequate to rebut your original statement.

By the end of your paper, you should be able to unequivocally reaffirm your original position.

    **Assignment Expectations**

**Length:** Follow the number of pages required in the assignment excluding cover page and references. Each page should have about 300 words.

Your assignment will be evaluated based on the Rubric.

You are required to make effective and appropriate use of in-text citations to the assigned readings and other source material to support your arguments. Please use Trident's

    Part 1

    First, review the following video:

Now, review the following scenario (which can be an example of other situations):

Donald is a Team Leader at TelephonUs Inc., a local direct sales company. His team has been assigned to handle recruitment via telephone for another direct sales company. Because of this, his job now mainly consists of ascertaining that his Customer Service Representatives are able to meet their team's quota for daily calls. A team member's failure to meet quota is automatically his failure, too.

He has observed in the past year that two of his subordinates, Pam and Jim, seem to be having a budding romantic relationship. Though he didn't give much thought to it at first, in the past two months Donald has become increasingly concerned about them as he observes Jim's performance degrading. He looks at their logs and notices that many leads which were supposed to be Jim's somehow ended up becoming Pam's. This is alarming for Donald, because Jim's failure as a Customer Service Representative reflects poorly on Donald's capability as Team Leader.

Bothered by this, Donald asks Bernadette, a Training and Development Officer with the HRMD, about the company's policy on office romances. "We don't allow them because we want to avoid potential sexual harassment suits. Why do you ask?" Bernadette responds.

"I just noticed Jim and Pam are —", says Donald.

Bernadette responds…."Oh! They were dating even before they joined the company. Just don't pay attention to it. They're both consenting adults and it's not like he's her boss or she's his boss. Believe me, Donald, it's harmless."

Now, let's discuss….. what are your thoughts on the following, taking into account our readings and the video on Moral Muteness:

Should Donald take Bernadette's advice and turn a blind eye to the situation, or should he intervene?

Think of a time when you did speak up about something that conflicted with your values. What motivated you to speak up? It often takes courage to speak up; what enabled you to have the courage to speak up?

    Part 2

Purpose: For this assignment, you will take a look at a variety of organizations and consider their corporate culture and ethical practices, and evaluate if they are “motivating” to employees, managers, and all stakeholders (those connected to the organization).

    Tasks:

    1) Using the links below, browse through these lists of the “best companies” and most “enjoyable companies”, and then list 3 examples of the leading companies that are found to be the most “motiving” ethically to employees, managers, and all stakeholders.

    3) Overall, in your discussion, explain why you have selected the three companies as exemplary.

    4) Finally, through your own research, provide a suggestion regarding a fourth company, organization, nonprofit, etc. that should be included on this list, and explain why. In your explanation, include details related to the organization’s corporate culture and ethical practices.

At least one outside reference should be used and cited according to APA formatted guidelines.

    Syrian and Ukrainian Migration

For this chapter's case study, we will discuss migration to Europe from Syria or Ukraine. For this week's discussion board, I want you to imagine that you have been asked to prepare a briefing for the European Commission’s Migration and Home Affairs department. Based on your knowledge of European history, and world geography, and the articles you’ve read, which of the following policies would you select as the best approach to migration to Europe from Syria or Ukraine?

    1. Allow all migrants from Syria or Ukraine to enter Europe.

    2. Only migrants who pass detailed background checks should be allowed. Those who do not pass background checks will be deported back to Syria or Ukraine.

    3. Europe should prohibit migrants from entering Europe and should instead support safe refugee camps in or near Syria or Ukraine.

    4. Europe should prohibit migrants from entering Europe and should instead intervene in Syria and Ukraine militarily.

    5. Europe should proportionally allocate a set number of migrants for each country based on economic and demographic factors.

Explain why the approach you selected is the best way to handle this issue. Remember to cite evidence from the assigned articles in your initial response. Don’t forget to respond to two of your classmates before the discussion closes.
