Cohen's (1994) criticism of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) highlighted several key points that many researchers and colleagues have emphasized, as well as problems in statistics and research that have been discussed for decades. The practicability of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) remains an issue and is often insisted upon as a panacea, especially in psychology. A result can be statistically significant but still not meaningful in a real-world context.
Cohen (1994) reasoned using a syllogism to illustrate a positive test for schizophrenia, demonstrating an ironic result through statistical significance testing. An error in elementary logic made frequently by NHST proponents and pointed out by its critics is the thoughtless, usually implicit, conclusion that if Ho is rejected, then the theory is established: If A then B; B therefore A. But even the valid form of the syllogism (if A then B; not B, thus not A) can be misinterpreted (Cohen ,1994).For my understanding, taking random people with PTSD, such as veterans who lost legs in war, women who were raped, adults who were molested at home as children, and other typical stressors causing PTSD, as a sample to test. The null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) may be positive and practical for the general population with PTSD, but it is difficult to interpret.
Cohen advocated for a greater emphasis on effect sizes and confidence intervals, which provide more information about the magnitude and precision of an effect. Meta-analysis, with its focus on effect sizes, is a notable feature in the contemporary research landscape (Cohen, 1994). Effect sizes help researchers understand the practical significance of findings, which is essential for applying research results in real-world settings. Cohen (1994) pointed out what is alarming in the psychology field, in which null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) can be fallacious or even erroneous in the real world. As researchers, we have a considerable array of statistical techniques that can help us develop theories of depth, but they must be used sensibly and heavily informed by informed judgment (Cohen, 1994). Statistical analysis needs nuanced approaches that work effectively.

    **Assessing Bad Goyfs Operations Management**

For a creative brand like Bad Goyfs, constantly updating its content lineup is essential for staying relevant and keeping viewers engaged. Collier and Evans (2024) remind us that organizations must evolve their offerings to meet customer expectations and adapt to new technology. In the entertainment industry, this involves experimenting with new formats, enhancing production quality, and adapting to algorithm changes that impact visibility. If Bad Goyfs stopped innovating, audience growth and engagement would quickly decline.

Currently, Bad Goyfs is exploring ideas such as a premium membership program and an AI-assisted deck-analysis series that would provide fans with deeper insights into the Magic: The Gathering meta. To evaluate the performance of these ideas, the team could monitor key metrics, including watch time, audience retention, click-through rate (CTR), subscriber growth, and viewer engagement metrics such as likes, comments, and shares (AltexSoft, 2024; ClearPoint Strategy, 2025).

The transformation process at Bad Goyfs focuses on content creation. Inputs are our ideas, scripts, footage, and editing software that undergo filming and post-production to become final YouTube videos. The results are published content, analytics data, and viewer feedback. Success is measured by how efficiently videos are produced, how consistent the quality remains, and how each episode performs in terms of engagement and viewer satisfaction (Collier & Evans, 2024; 6Sigma.us, 2024).

For my company, Intuitive Surgical, it is extremely important to continually revise their product and service offerings due to the dynamic nature of the healthcare environment (Collier & Evans, 2017). Revising product offerings such as a new robotic instrument or new robot can take a very long time. For this reason, I believe that continually revising service offerings in response to a changing environment is probably a more realistic area of focus for intuitive to continuously revise. Making these changes is important because surgeons, hospitals, and patients are constantly looking for the best option for treatment. As competitors emerge the need to differentiate oneself from the rest of the pack is more and more important.

One new product that Intuitive has recently released is their newest robotic platform da Vinci 5. This new robot comes with a number of features such as allowing surgeons to feel the amount of force they are applying on tissue, better visualization, and allowing them to make adjustments to other operative factors without standing up from the surgeon console (Da Vinci 5, 2024). Luckily the new da Vinci 5 comes with the ability to track loads of important data metrics to measure performance. This includes time per case, time per step of each procedure, uptime of the robot, utilization rates, force applied on tissue and more (Da Vinci 5, 2024). All of this information when paired with hospital outcome data can be used to improve the da Vinci system and provide surgeons with actionable insights to work on their weak points in surgery.

To be developed the DV5 went through a transformation process where it went from a concept in development to actually being deployed around the globe. The inputs for the system included surgeon and staff feedback from past models, surveys on what healthcare execs value the most, raw materials, R&D talent, and the need to meet regulatory requirements. Through design and development, manufacturing, clinical training/product deployment, and feedback, the output of a successful robotic system was created.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

The readings that I have completed throughout this week have not only widened my perspectives on the constraints of conventional null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) but also reinforced the significance of effect sizes as an immensely crucial aspect of any research conducted in the field of psychology. In the past, my critical analysis has mostly been based on the position of p-values as the most significant measurement of the significance of a finding. A review of Gravetter and Wallnau (2017), lecture by Andy Field (2005) on effect sizes, and the article by Cohen (1994) has enabled me to realise that statistical significance does not necessarily correspond to practical significance.
A key lesson learnt is that effect sizes are measures of the size of a observed effect regardless of the size of the sample. Although a p-value can tell whether an effect is probable to occur due to chance, it cannot tell whether the effect has real-world implications (Gravetter and Wallnau, 2017). Cohen (1994) argued that NHST is a ritualised exercise so that people often mislead researchers to think that statistical significance must be of scientific importance. Such an error may cause an overvaluation of small but statistically significant effects and in particular situations when the size of a sample is large enough to observe trivial effects.
Field (2005) presented the problem with the examples where the same mean differences gave both significant and non-significant results only depending on the sample size. As this demonstration has shown, NHST is greatly dependent on the sample size and thus a poor single measure of the significance of an effect. By contrast, due to their standardised representation, effect sizes, including those of Cohen d and Pearson r, allow comparison across studies and scales of measurement to enable the accrual of cumulative knowledge and reproducibility in psychology.
The fact that Cohen (1994) states that the null hypothesis is hardly ever true in the behavioural sciences was also particularly enlightening to me. Due to the nature variability of human behaviour, there is no true no-difference between the groups to expect. This then implies that the habitual rejection of the null hypothesis does not provide much informative value and that interests of estimating effect sizes and their confidence intervals are better suited to scientific use.
The development of a finer sense of effect sizes has not just sharpened my ability to respond critically to research results, but also will serve as a beneficial future addition to my own work, be it in the appraisal of clinical interventions, experimental design, or provision of evidence based practise. As an illustration, knowing that a treatment has a statistically significant effect is only of limited use unless one is also aware of and evaluates the size of that effect- what it means in practise to clients or communities.
In the future, I will use this knowledge by systematically searching, computing and reporting effect sizes alongside p-values. By valuing the scale and statistical significance of effects, I hope to be a more responsible practitioner in the field as well as to make sure that psychological science is rigorous and relevant.
