    1. criminal justice and criminology research, ensuring the validity of experimental findings is crucial for producing reliable and generalizable results. Internal validity refers to the extent to which a study can demonstrate a causal relationship between variables, while external validity pertains to the generalizability of the findings to broader populations or settings (Rennison & Hart, 2022). Several threats to both internal and external validity exist, and researchers must implement strategies to control for these issues.

Threats to Internal Validity and Their Controls

History: This occurs when events outside the experiment influence the outcome. For instance, if a study on crime prevention techniques coincides with a high-profile crime event, public attitudes may shift, affecting the results. To control for history, researchers can use control groups and ensure that experimental and control conditions experience the same external influences (Rennison & Hart, 2022).

Maturation: Over time, participants naturally change, which may impact study outcomes, particularly in longitudinal studies. To mitigate this, researchers can use shorter study durations, employ matched control groups, or statistically adjust for maturation effects through time-series analysis (Rennison & Hart, 2022).

Testing Effects: When participants take the same test multiple times, they may improve simply due to familiarity rather than the experimental intervention. To counteract this, researchers can use alternative test forms, implement a control group, or conduct pre-tests and post-tests at varying intervals (Rennison & Hart, 2022).

Instrumentation: Changes in measurement tools or observer behaviors over time can lead to inconsistencies. Ensuring standardized procedures, maintaining consistent scoring rubrics, and calibrating instruments periodically help control for this threat (Rennison & Hart, 2022).

Threats to External Validity and Their Controls

Selection Bias: If participants are not randomly selected, the results may not be generalizable to the larger population. Randomization, stratified sampling, and ensuring a representative sample can help mitigate selection bias (Rennison & Hart, 2022).

Reactivity (Hawthorne Effect): Participants may alter their behavior simply because they are aware they are being observed. To control for reactivity, researchers can use unobtrusive measures, conduct double-blind studies, or employ deception (with ethical considerations) to minimize awareness of the experimental conditions (Rennison & Hart, 2022).

Interaction Effects: Sometimes, the interaction between selection and treatment, or pre-testing and treatment, can impact generalizability. Conducting field experiments, using diverse samples, and replicating studies in different contexts can reduce these concerns (Rennison & Hart, 2022).

By understanding and addressing these threats, researchers can enhance both the internal and external validity of their studies, leading to more accurate and applicable findings in criminal justice research.

    2. Threats to internal validity, like history and maturation, can seriously mess with the accuracy of experimental results.  History effects happen when outside events influence participants during a study, making it hard to tell if the changes seen are due to the experiment itself.  One way to control for this is by using a control group that doesn’t get the treatment, so researchers can compare and see if the changes happen regardless of the experiment.  Maturation, on the other hand, refers to natural changes in participants over time, like growing older or gaining experience, which can affect results.  A good way to handle this is by keeping experiments short when possible and ensuring both experimental and control groups are similar in age, experience, or other relevant factors (Rennison, 2019).

External validity threats, like selection bias and reactivity, can mess up how well results apply to a larger population. Selection bias happens when the sample isn’t truly representative, which can be controlled by using random selection and stratified sampling to ensure diversity.  Reactivity, where participants change their behavior just because they know they’re being studied, is another issue.  To reduce this, researchers can use deception when ethical, keep the study’s true purpose hidden until after data collection, or use unobtrusive measures to observe behavior naturally. Controlling for these threats helps ensure that findings aren’t just valid in a controlled lab setting but also hold weight in the real world (Rennison, 2019).

    Goal Statement

Good evening, my name is, and I am currently enrolling in the CACREP-accredited Master’s Counseling program at Walden University. From an early age, I discovered my natural ability to actively listen to others, and my passion for counseling was shaped by my personal experiences growing up in a household where my own feelings often went unheard. This realization led me to envision a future where I could provide a voice for those who feel silenced and support individuals in navigating life’s challenges.

My upbringing further solidified my commitment to mental health advocacy. My parents were foster caregivers, and I often witnessed children being prescribed medications without first being offered evidence-based interventions. Many of these children expressed that no one truly listened to their struggles; instead, their emotions were quickly addressed with medication rather than therapeutic techniques that could have helped them develop essential coping skills. Seeing this inspired me to research the effects of these medications and the importance of alternative interventions. I wanted to understand why so many children were left feeling unheard and unsupported, and I became determined to be a part of the solution.

I strongly believe that mental health is just as important as physical health, and my goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals by providing them with the tools they need to cope, grow, and thrive. Through my work in intensive in-home counseling, I have had the privilege of working with families and witnessing firsthand the impact of dedicated support. Seeing success unfold in the lives of those I assist has only strengthened my passion and desire to expand my knowledge and skills in the counseling field.

Enrolling in Walden University’s Master’s Counseling program is the next step in my journey to becoming an effective and compassionate counselor. My ultimate goal is to empower individuals, advocate for mental health awareness, and emphasize the importance of communication and emotional well-being. I also hope to set an example for my children, showing them that it is not about where you start but how you finish. I am eager to enhance my skills and continue making a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most.

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Sincerely,
    Janae Boone

    ### Why I Desire to Become a Counselor

I am currently enrolling in a CACREP-accredited course with the goal of becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) after graduation. Through my work in intensive in-home services and my previous studies in psychology, I have witnessed how often individuals neglect their mental health. While working with families and children, I have also observed how frequently medication is prescribed before fully understanding the root cause of their struggles. Recognizing this pattern has strengthened my resolve to be an advocate for those in need. My personal motto has always been: If I can reach even one person, I know I am fulfilling my purpose.

From an early age, I realized I had a natural ability to ask probing questions, encourage meaningful conversations, and actively listen. Growing up in a household where we were often told to be quiet only intensified my desire to listen attentively to others. Additionally, my experiences with foster siblings further opened my eyes to the challenges children face. I saw how, rather than being heard, their emotional struggles were often met with increased medication. Witnessing this inspired me to become a voice for those who feel unheard and to find solutions that address the underlying trauma rather than just the symptoms.

While I am still exploring the exact path I will take within the counseling field, I know with certainty that I want to become a Licensed Counselor. My passion for understanding and supporting individuals extends beyond just mental health; it also includes fostering inclusivity and cultural awareness.

    ### Cultural Interaction Experience

One significant experience that shaped my perspective occurred during a workplace potluck. A Muslim man and woman on my team initially chose not to participate, opting instead to eat separately due to dietary restrictions. At first, I was unaware of the cultural differences at play, but after learning more, I wanted to ensure they felt included. I suggested scheduling the potluck at a time that accommodated their prayer schedule and encouraged the team to research and prepare dishes they could also enjoy.

When the next potluck took place, they expressed their gratitude for my efforts, hugging me and thanking me for not judging them. This experience reinforced my belief that small acts of understanding can make a profound difference in making people feel valued and accepted.

I also realized that understanding cultural differences goes beyond tolerance—it requires active effort to adapt environments and promote inclusivity. By fostering open communication and encouraging others to embrace diversity, I learned that respecting cultural differences strengthens relationships and creates more collaborative, welcoming spaces. This experience continues to shape how I approach interpersonal connections, ensuring that everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of background. It reinforced my belief that creating inclusive environments not only promotes harmony but also enriches experiences for everyone involved.

    ### Forming Effective Interpersonal Relationships

In my professional journey, I have gained valuable insights into group dynamics. Initially unfamiliar with working in large group settings, I quickly learned the importance of respect, active listening, and adaptability. Not everyone shares the same views, and it became clear that effective communication requires recognizing different communication styles and adjusting accordingly. Patience was key in building strong interpersonal relationships within group settings, as understanding others takes time and effort.

Working in intensive in-home counseling and conducting one-on-one sessions has further refined my skills in empathy, patience, and trust-building. I have learned that establishing rapport is essential for individuals to feel safe opening up about their challenges. My approach focuses on solutions while ensuring that my clients do not internalize blame for their circumstances. I strive to maintain open communication, creating a space where they feel free to express themselves without fear of judgment.

My journey thus far has reinforced my passion for helping others navigate their struggles and find strength in their voices. I am eager to continue my education and training at Liberty University, where I can further develop the skills necessary to make a lasting impact in the field of counseling.

    Thank You,

    Janae Boone

    Thank You,

    Janae Boone

    My personal information:

    Who I Am Now

My journey in HR has allowed me to develop a comprehensive skill set, from talent acquisition to employee relations and strategic planning. Currently, I am pursuing a bachelor's degree in Business Management with a concentration in Human Resources, which will formalize my practical experience with academic theory and the latest industry practices. My personal characteristics include strong leadership, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to ethical practices. A defining moment in my career was when I successfully mediated a workplace conflict that resulted in improved team dynamics and productivity, reinforcing my belief in the power of effective HR management.

    My Goals

My long-term goals are a blend of professional growth and academic achievement. First, upon completing my bachelor's degree, I aim to enroll in a Master's program specializing in Human Resources Management. This advanced education will equip me with cutting-edge knowledge to lead HR departments adeptly. Second, I aspire to be in position within a forward-thinking organization where I can influence positive change and foster a culture of continuous improvement and employee engagement. Third, I plan to contribute to the field of HR by publishing articles and research on emerging trends and best practices, thereby shaping the future of HR management.

    How I Will Get There

To realize these goals, I have mapped out actionable steps with specific target dates. For my master's degree aspiration, the first step is to complete my bachelor's degree with a high GPA, targeted for the next two years. The second step involves researching graduate programs and preparing my application materials six months prior to graduation. To overcome potential challenges such as balancing work, study, and personal life, I will seek flexible learning options and time management strategies. In pursuit of the Director role, my initial step is to gain broader experience in various HR functions over the next two years. Following this, I will focus on developing executive leadership skills through mentorship and professional development courses within the next seven years. Anticipating obstacles like competitive job markets, I will build a robust professional network and maintain a portfolio of significant achievements.

With a clear vision and proactive approach, I am confident in my path toward these professional and academic milestones.
