One of the Cornerstones of Azusa Pacific University is Service. Your Faith Integration
paper (written in English) will focus on how you will incorporate your faith or worldview
into your diverse community of service as a nurse practitioner. In this formal research
paper, I want you to substantiate your thoughts with viable academic resources
(minimum of two academic resources which one of the resources can be the Bible).

Challenge yourself to look at your career as a nurse practitioner looking through the lens
of a cultural advocate and holistic health provider. Look at ways on how you can impact
your patients or your colleagues on a cultural level and on a faith/worldview level.

For example, each week you have been challenged to reflect on faith and cultural views.
Utilize what you already know and what you have learned to expand upon your outlook
on how to treat patients that are from a different cultural than your own. Take one
aspect of faith (what motivates you to make an impact in your world) and integrate it
into your culturally diverse medical practice.

    Guidelines:

    • Create a thesis based on your interest in nursing. Focus on the “why” you want to
write about this area of medicine and how your personal
faith/worldview/perspective will help motivate you to make a difference.

    • Make this paper personal. You are permitted to use the 3rd person when writing
    this paper.

    • Two or more resources are required to substantiate and support your thesis
statement. One viable resource you can use is the Bible.

    • The Faith Integration paper should include:
o An APA formatted title page
o Two or more pages of content

    § Font size: 12
    § Double spaced
    § Margins: 1”
    § Formal and professional language

o One APA formatted resource page
§ Two or more academic resources
§ Include personal faith/worldview/perspective to support your

    personal connection

    Examples of thesis statements:

    • Focus on the increase of cases of Latino patients with latter stages of cancer.
Come up with strategies on how to demonstrate the importance of
preventative care. Include methods of approach that would include holistic
care: language services, sensitivity to traditions, cultural norms, and personal
beliefs. How would your personal culture, belief and traditions help you to
    convey this vital information?

    • Share a personal experience (write in the first person) on your own personal
growth since becoming a nurse/nurse practitioner and working with culturally
diverse patients. Give an example on how you have grown as a person and
how your personal faith/belief/worldview has changed. What challenges are
you facing in becoming a culturally competent nurse? What ways assist you in
becoming more culturally aware or sensitive? Does your
faith/belief/worldview influence the way you treat your patients?

    • Research the various methods/approaches/training modules that are available
to healthcare providers to increase their cultural awareness and/or cultural
sensitivity. Share your thoughts on the pros and cons of these
methods/approaches/training modules. Based on your personal
faith/belief/worldview, how can increasing your cultural knowledge help you
understand your patients better? You can include methods on how to raise
patient compliancy rates and patient satisfaction scores.

Each week you will submit a section of your paper for review.

    • Week 7 – Submit one or two sentences stating your thesis or main idea for
your Faith Integration paper. (10 points)

    • Week 8 – Submit the title of your paper and two or more academic
resources (that you will use for your paper) in APA format (10 points)

    • Week 9 – Submit an outline (10 points)
    • Week 10 – Submit introduction and literature review (10 points)
    • Week 11- Finalized and revised paper (35 points)

o You must also include a Title page (4 points), correct APA formatting (5
points), correct APA reference page (5 points)

This assignment is worth 9% of your total grade.

    **Thesis / Main Idea**

Guided by the biblical call to serve the vulnerable, I will integrate my faith with culturally sensitive nursing practice to address health disparities in immigrant and minority populations through preventive screenings, patient education, and respectful family-centered care.

Faith-Driven Service: Integrating Christian Values to Reduce Health Disparities Among Immigrant Communities

Since becoming a nurse and now advancing as a Family Nurse Practitioner student, I have experienced tremendous personal and spiritual growth. As an immigrant from Iran, I came to the United States alone, learning to navigate a new culture, language, and healthcare system without the support of my family at first. Those early years taught me empathy in a way no textbook could. Now, as my parents have recently joined me here, I see them face the same challenges I once did—struggling with appointments, insurance, and understanding medical instructions. Witnessing their experience has deepened my awareness of the barriers immigrant and minority populations face every day in accessing care.

Being born and raised in a Muslim family instilled in me strong values of compassion, humility, and respect for others. Over time, my Christian faith has built upon those same principles, shaping my worldview into one that emphasizes service, love, and the dignity of every person. Working at Cedars-Sinai, I care for many culturally diverse patients, and I often see reflections of my own story in them. Early in my career, I focused mostly on providing correct treatments and following clinical guidelines. With experience and faith, I learned that true nursing care is holistic—it includes understanding each patient’s beliefs, traditions, and family dynamics.

One moment that shaped my growth was caring for a Spanish-speaking patient who relied heavily on her faith and family for strength during recovery. By taking time to listen through an interpreter, involving her loved ones in care, and showing genuine respect for her beliefs, I saw how trust and healing grew hand in hand. That experience reminded me that cultural sensitivity is not about knowing every custom—it’s about approaching every person with humility and openness.

The greatest challenge I face in becoming a culturally competent nurse is balancing the fast pace of hospital life with the need to truly connect and understand each patient’s cultural background. What helps me grow is continuous self-reflection, prayer, and learning from my diverse coworkers and patients. My faith calls me to serve the vulnerable with love and integrity, while my immigrant experience allows me to see each patient not as “different,” but as someone deserving of understanding and belonging.

    GRADE:

    **## GuidelinesFaithIntegrationPaper-11.pdf**

    **## Shareapersonalexperience1.docx**

Share a personal experience (write in the first person) on your own personal
growth since becoming a nurse/nurse practitioner and working with culturally
    diverse patients.

    1. Input Validation
Risk – How Can It Happen?

All program inputs are a potential source of problems. If external data is not validated to ensure that it contains the right type
of information, the right amount of information, and the right structure of information, it can cause problems. Drawing used
    by permission of Dominik Joswig

    Real-world Examples:

In December 2005, a Japanese securities trader made a $1 billion typing error, when he mistakenly sold 600,000 shares
of stock at 1 yen each instead of selling one share for 600,000 yen. A few lines of code may have averted this error.
Fat fingered typing costs a trader’s bosses £128m, The Times Online, December 09, 2005
Web applications are highly vulnerable to input validation errors. Inputting the invalid entry “!@#$%^&*()” on a
vulnerable e-commerce site may cause performance issues, or “denial of service”, on a vulnerable system, or invalid
passwords such as “pwd’” or “1=1— ” may result in unauthorized access.
    http://www.processor.com/editorial/article.asp?
    article=articles%2Fp3112%2F32p12%2F32p12%2F32p12.asp&guid=&searchtype=&WordList=&bJumpTo=True
A Norwegian woman mistyped her account number on an internet banking system. Instead of typing her 11-digit
account number, she accidentally typed an extra digit, for a total of 12 numbers. The system discarded the extra digit,
and transferred $100,000 to the (incorrect) account. A simple dialog box informing her that she had typed too many
digits would have helped avoid this expensive error.
Olsen, Kai. “The $100,000 Keying error” IEEE Computer, August 2008
The site xssed.com lists nearly 13,000 vulnerable Web pages, including sites such
    as yahoo.com, google.com, msn.com, facebook.com, craigslist.com and cnn.com

    Example in code:

    testScore = int(input('Enter test score: '))
    if testScore >= 90:
    print('Your grade is A')
    elif testScore >= 80:
    print('Your grade is B')
    elif testScore >= 70:
    print('Your grade is C')
    elif testScore >= 60:
    print('Your grade is D')
    else:
    print('Your grade is F')

This code fails to check for negative test scores or for test scores above 100.

Code Responsibly– How Can I Properly Validate Input?

Check all input: Below is a partial list of some checks to include:

Range check: check numbers to ensure they are within a range of possible values, e.g., the value for month should lie
    between 1 and 12.
Reasonable check: check values for their reasonableness, e.g. (age > 16) && (age < 100)
Arithmetic check: check variables for values that might cause problems such as division by zero.
Format check: check that the data is in a specified format (template), e.g., dates have to be in the format
    DD/MM/YYYY.

The following function shows input validation for a test score:

def check_input(min, max): prompt = "Enter an integer number between %d and %d: " % (min, max) value =
int(input(prompt)) while (value < min or value > max): value = int(input(prompt)) return value

    2. Cryptographic Practices
    Encrypt Data in Python
First, we need to install the cryptography library:

    pip3 install cryptography

4/19/24, 3:50 PM Secure Coding Practices Examples with Python.html

    Example in code:

    testScore = int(input('Enter test score: '))
    if testScore >= 90:
    print('Your grade is A')
    elif testScore >= 80:
    print('Your grade is B')
    elif testScore >= 70:
    print('Your grade is C')
    elif testScore >= 60:
    print('Your grade is D')
    else:
    print('Your grade is F')

Prescribing for Older Adults: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in Older Adults

    FDA-Approved Drug

Sertraline, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), is an FDA-approved first-line option for MDD in older adults.  Research shows that sertraline has the best safety profile for potential drug–drug interaction with older adults’ medications compared to tricyclics and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and is well tolerated when started low and titrated slowly (Jaros et al., 2024).

    Off-Label Drug

For treatment-resistant cases or severe/refractory depression, the off-label use of repeated intravenous ketamine infusion (or clinic-administered ketamine protocols) a rapid-acting antidepressant strategy can be used.  While, evidence for older adults is limited, early studies and pilot data suggest potential benefits with attention to cardiovascular, cognitive, and urinary risks (Srifuengfung et al., 2023).

    Non-Pharmacological Intervention

Problem-Solving Therapy (PST) for late life depression, including home-based or case-management and PST adaptations, has demonstrated consistent randomized controlled trial evidence for reduction of depressive symptoms and improvement of functioning in older adults, even those with executive dysfunction and limited access to services (Shang et al., 2023).

Risk Assessment to Inform Treatment Decisions

In older adult populations, a structured risk assessment is necessary before any pharmacological treatment is begun. The risk assessment should include, first, comorbidity & organ function screening, which should review cardiac history, blood pressure control, orthostatic hypotension, renal and hepatic function, and urinary symptoms. (Older adults have decreased renal/hepatic clearance and higher sensitivity to adverse effects) (Malhi et al., 2023). Second, medication reconciliation and drug-drug interactions should be done since, older adults are frequently on multiple agents (polypharmacy). Third, baseline cognition, orthostasis, and fall risk (antidepressants and rapid-acting agents can affect balance, blood pressure, or cognition) should also be assessed. Fourth, for ketamine, pre-treatment cardiovascular assessment should be done given transient hypertension and tachycardia reported with ketamine infusions. Finally, suicide risk assessment should be carried out and urgent referral or higher level of care if imminent risk (Malhi et al., 2023).

    Risks and Benefits

    Sertraline

Benefits: It is well-studied in older adults; generally favorable tolerability; lower anticholinergic and cardiotoxic effects than TCAs; effective for depressive symptoms and anxiety comorbidity (Jaros et al., 2024).

Risks: It can lead to gastrointestinal upset, hyponatremia (SIADH) particularly in the elderly, increased bleeding risk with concomitant anticoagulants/NSAIDs, possible sexual side effects, and potential for drug–drug interactions (Jaros et al., 2024).

    IV Ketamine

Benefits: Compared with treatment resistant depression, many experience quicker antidepressant effects (hours to days) as well as reduction in suicidal ideation especially when other methods slow down. There is credible and increasing supportive literature on its use for older adults under close supervision (Srifuengfung et al., 2023).

Risks: Transient hypertension and tachycardia during dosing, dissociative and perceptual disturbances, potential cognitive effects, urinary adverse effects with repeated exposure, potential for misuse/abuse, and incomplete long-term safety data in geriatric populations (Srifuengfung et al., 2023).

    Clinical Practice Guidelines and Justification

Primary care and psychiatric guidance commonly recommend SSRIs such as sertraline or escitalopram as first-line agents in older adults because of tolerability and evidence base; sources supporting these recommendations include AAFP reviews and geriatric psychiatry reviews (Jaros et al., 2024). This justifies selecting sertraline as a first-line pharmacologic option. IV racemic ketamine remains an off-label option and is supported by growing but still limited evidence in older adults; specialty consultation, risk-benefit discussion, and facility-level monitoring protocols are recommended before use (Srifuengfung et al., 2023).

    KELLY E L

    Bipolar Disorder in Pregnancy

    FDA-Approved Pharmacotherapy

Lamotrigine is an FDA-approved mood stabilizer commonly used for maintenance treatment in bipolar disorder and is considered one of the safest options during pregnancy (Jin, 2022). Lamotrigine is particularly effective for those patients with a higher prevalence of depressive episodes, and is effective during pregnancy and postpartum to prevent relapse of symptoms (Hasser et al., 2024).

    Off-Label Pharmacotherapy

A medication that may be used off-label in bipolar disorder is sertraline. It has been established to be largely safe to use in pregnancy (Singh & Deep, 2022). It is particularly used in bipolar depression, when mood stabilizers are contraindicated or poorly tolerated.

    Nonpharmacologic Intervention

Nonpharmacologic interventions that can be used during pregnancy for bipolar disorder include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, and light therapy (Bhat, n.d).

    Risk Assessment

To inform treatment decisions for a pregnant patient with bipolar disorder, it is recommended to use a comprehensive perinatal psychiatric risk assessment that includes suicide risk, risk of relapse, and medication teratogenicity. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) screens for perinatal depression but also flags bipolar symptoms when scores are high and atypical (Bradley et al., 2025). The recommendation is to utilize this tool at the initial prenatal visit, third trimester, and postpartum. Additional tools include the C-SSRS to assess suicidal ideation and behavior, and should be used for any patient with mood instability during pregnancy (Bhat, n.d). To guide medication decisions during pregnancy or lactation, providers must weigh the risks of untreated psychiatric illness against potential harms like birth defects and neurodevelopmental issues. While each case is unique, experts generally agree that continuing medication often offers greater benefits, especially for patients with a history of severe illness.

    Risks and Benefits of Lamotrigine

Lamotrigine is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy in patients with bipolar disorder, particularly when used as monotherapy, and has not been associated

with a significant increase in major congenital malformations (The Organization of Teratology Information Specialists, 2025). However, its clearance increases during pregnancy, which may reduce serum levels and heighten relapse risk, making therapeutic drug monitoring essential (Nonacs, 2021). While early concerns about neural tube defects existed, more recent data suggest minimal teratogenic risk when lamotrigine is used alone.

    Risks and Benefits of Sertraline

Sertraline, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), is commonly prescribed during pregnancy due to its relatively low teratogenic risk. A large population-based study found no significant association between sertraline use in early pregnancy and major birth defects, supporting its safety when used as monotherapy (Anderson et al., 2020). Although SSRIs may be linked to neonatal adaptation syndrome, characterized by transient symptoms such as jitteriness or respiratory distress, these effects are typically mild and self-limiting.

    Clinical Practice Guidelines

There are clinical practice guidelines for bipolar disorder by the Veterans’ Administration (VA). In regards to sertraline, recommendation number 14 states that there is insufficient evidence for or against using sertraline, but the research results indicate little to no effectiveness, and a risk of switching to mania (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2023). The VA suggests against lamotrigine as monotherapy for the prevention of recurrence of mania, but recommends it for the prevention of recurrence of bipolar depressive episodes (2023). These recommendations are not specific to pregnancy, but it does list specific recommendations specific to pregnancy that include valproate, carbamazepine, and topiramate in women of childbearing potential, and continuing lithium low-dose in women who are or may become pregnant (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2023).
