    Data Visualization Practice

Practice Activity: Describing Data Graphically in Excel

    Purpose

The purpose of this activity is to practice using
**Excel** for basic data analysis and graphing. You will work with an Excel dataset provided and complete several exercises to gain experience with descriptive statistics, histograms, and data visualization.

    This activity is for
**practice only**—it is not graded, but completing it will help you succeed on future assignments.

    Step 1: Prepare Excel

    Enable the Analysis ToolPak

    The
**Analysis ToolPak** is an Excel add-in that provides advanced analysis tools like histograms, regression, and descriptive statistics.

    ·
**For Excel in Microsoft 365 (Windows/Mac):**

    1. Go to the
    **File** tab.

    2. Select
    **Options** (Windows) or
    **Preferences** (Mac).

    3. Choose
    **Add-ins**.

    4. At the bottom, find
    **Manage: Excel Add-ins** and click
    **Go**.

    5. Check the box for
    **Analysis ToolPak** and click
    **OK**.

    6. You should now see
    **Data Analysis** under the
    **Data** tab on the ribbon.

    ·
    **If you don’t see it:**

. Microsoft Support: Load the Analysis ToolPak

Step 2: Download and Open the Files

    1. Download the Excel file:
    [DescribingDataGraphically_Excel_Practice_WithPrompts.xlsx](https://henderson.instructure.com/courses/24639/files/2688373?wrap=1) [Download DescribingDataGraphically_Excel_Practice_WithPrompts.xlsx](https://henderson.instructure.com/courses/24639/files/2688373/download?download_frd=1)

    2. Save it on your computer.

    3. Open the file in Excel.

    Step 3: Exercises

Work through each of the exercises below using Excel. Detailed instructions are provided to guide you.

**Exercise 1 – Hitchcock Film Lengths**

The worksheet contains a list of Hitchcock films and their lengths (in minutes).

    **Part A – Create a Histogram**

    1. Go to the
    **Data** tab →
    **Data Analysis** → choose
    **Histogram**.

    2. For
**Input Range**, select the column with “Film Lengths (min)”.

    3. For
**Bin Range**, leave blank (Excel will create bins automatically).

    4. Check
    **Chart Output**.

    5. Click
    **OK** to create the histogram.

**Part B – Adjust Bin Labels**

    1. Right-click the horizontal axis labels on the histogram.

    2. Choose
    **Format Axis**.

    3. Change the option so bins display as
    **boundaries (cutpoints)** rather than midpoints.

**Part C – Add a Title and Note**

    1. Click the chart title and change it to:

_“Histogram of Hitchcock Film Lengths (min)”_

    2. Insert a text box at the bottom and type:

    _“Bins contain their left endpoints (e.g., 120 ≤ x < 130).”_

    **Part D – Outliers**

    · Look at your histogram. Which film seems unusually long compared to the others? Write it down.

    **Part E – Create a Stem-and-Leaf Alternative**
Excel does not have a built-in stem-and-leaf plot. Instead, create a
    **sorted list**:

    1. Copy the film lengths into a new sheet.

    2. Sort the data from smallest to largest.

    3. This acts as your “leaf” display and will help answer interpretation questions.

**Part F – Answer These Questions:**

    · What is the longest film in the dataset?

    · Are there any films between 85 and 100 minutes?

    · How many films are shorter than 110 minutes?

    · What is the mode (most common length)?

    · Which graph (histogram or sorted list) do you find easier for interpreting film lengths, and why?

    **Exercise 2 – Exam Scores**

Open the worksheet with Exam 1 scores.

    · Use
**Insert > Histogram** to visualize the data with bins of size
**10** and then with bins of size
    **5**.

    · Compare: What does the histogram with smaller bin size reveal that the larger one does not?

**Exercise 3 – NBA Team Salaries**

Open the worksheet with NBA salaries.

    · Create a histogram.

    · Determine:

    1. How many teams had salaries of at least $70 million?

    2. What is the median salary? (Hint: Use the =MEDIAN() formula.)

    **Exercise 4 – Commute Times**

Open the worksheet with commute times.

    **Part A – Histogram**

    1. Use
**Data Analysis > Histogram** to create a histogram.

    2. Add a descriptive title:
    _“Professor’s Commute Times (minutes)”_.

    3. Add a footnote explaining which endpoints are included.

    **Part B – Outlier Removal**

    · One data point (37.4 minutes) is an outlier. Delete it, then re-create the histogram.

    **Part C – Interpretation**

    · How many commutes were between 18 and 18.5 minutes? (Hint: hover over the bin in the histogram.)

**Exercise 5 – News Reading Times**

**Part A – Histogram of Original Data**

    · Create a histogram using cutpoints.

    · Add axis labels (minutes) and a descriptive title.

    **Part B – Skewness**

    · Look at the shape: Is it skewed left, skewed right, or symmetric?

    **Part C – Data Transformation**

    · In a new column, enter the formula: =1/SQRT(cell) for each value.

    · Label this column
    **Transformed Data**.

**Part D – Histogram of Transformed Data**

    · Create another histogram of the transformed data.

    · Title it:
_“Histogram of Transformed News Reading Times (1/√x)”_.

    **Part E – Interpretation**

    · Compare the before/after histograms. What effect did the transformation have?

    **Christianity and Social Work Paper**

_Christianity and Social Work: What Difference does it make?_

This 5-7 pp. paper requires you to reflect on the impact of your faith system and beliefs on your social work practice. You will reflect upon the difference being a Christian makes in social work practice. It is to be based on your study of the following assigned readings:

    – Ethical Integration of Faith and Social Work Practice: Evangelism (Sherwood, 2002)
    – Chapter 1: An Interactional Approach to Helping  (Shulman, 2018, pp. 12-21)
    – Elephant in the Room: Race and Christian Social Workers (Brice, 2020)
    – You may also incorporate any classroom presentations and discussions in addition to your own perspective on the integration of a Christian worldview and social work practice.
    1. Based on the readings and course materials, define and describe each of the three assumptions underlying Shulman’s model (symbiosis, obstacles in the engagement, and strength for change)
    2. Discuss how each can relate to a Christian worldview.
    3. Briefly describe one of the clients you have worked with this semester; based on what you know about the client, include a description of the similarities and differences between you and the client in terms of worldview (attitudes, ideas, values, beliefs, etc. about faith, life, and the world), based upon what you know about the client (if you are not aware of these regarding the client, solely focus on your own worldview –-or spiritual framework— and discuss how you need to be attuned to this due to how it can impact perception and create blinders or filters).
    4. Insert a carefully selected excerpt of the dialog portion of one of your process records, focused on an example of either a faith dilemma (i.e., a situation that made you question your faith or when your worldview/faith values were challenged) or an example of when a Christian worldview/faith values helped or guided you in your work with the client (such as in terms of motivation, viewpoint, mandate, or approach – as discussed in class or how personal beliefs and values were impacted).
    5. Analyze the excerpt discussing how this situation impacted or was impacted by your Christian worldview and how it relates to at least one (1) of the underlying assumptions of the interactional approach.
    6. Discuss your understanding of the difference a Christian worldview can make in practice, including one passage of scripture that can guide your practice with the client system you serve. How can we avoid imposing our own worldview onto our clients?

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    ### **Discussion Prompt: Case Scenario**

Read the case scenario below, then respond to **both** of the following prompts in your initial post.

A county health department has collected detailed survey data on community members' chronic disease risk factors, including self-reported health conditions, household income, ZIP code, age, race/ethnicity, and transportation access. The department wants to share this dataset with university researchers and community organizations to support grant applications and intervention design. The dataset has been de-identified according to HIPAA Safe Harbor guidelines (names, addresses, and dates removed), and the department believes it is ready for public release.

However, a data steward on the team raises a concern: because the county is small (population ~85,000) and the survey includes detailed demographic breakdowns and geographic identifiers (ZIP code retained), it may be possible to re-identify individuals by cross-referencing publicly available data, especially for respondents from minority communities or those reporting rare conditions. The health director argues that the public benefit of releasing the data outweighs the small risk, and that HIPAA compliance is sufficient. The steward argues that ethical responsibility extends beyond legal minimums.

    #### **Your Task**

    1. **Prompt 1: Evaluate the legal and ethical dimensions.** Does HIPAA compliance alone make this data sharing decision appropriate? Discuss the difference between HIPAA's application to covered entities and the broader ethical obligations public health agencies have when sharing data. Reference at least one concept from the module lectures (e.g., data governance roles, survivor bias, data quality dimensions, or the tension between public benefit and privacy).
    2. **Prompt 2: Propose a course of action.** If you were the health director, how would you proceed? Consider: Would you release the data as-is, apply additional de-identification techniques, restrict access through data use agreements, or decline to share it? Justify your choice by weighing the trade-offs. If your recommendation differs from the approach described in the case, explain why. Draw on your own professional context, lived experience, or a specific public health domain you are familiar with to ground your reasoning.

**Encourage diversity of responses:** Students may take different positions (release, restrict, or withhold) and may prioritize different values (transparency, equity, privacy, research utility). There is no single correct answer; your reasoning and use of course concepts are what matter.
