Acknowledgment of spirituality as part of comprehensive nursing care has birthed many developed instruments aimed at evaluating and addressing the spiritual needs of patients. The Spiritual Assessment Scale (SAS) is one such important instrument in nursing practice that assesses various aspects of spirituality, including personal faith, meaning-making, and significance to the spiritual community.

The SAS enables nurses to discern particular spiritual issues and strengths within their patients; hence, they can draw up tailored care plans that incorporate the spiritual dimensions of the patient alongside the healthcare provided. Nurses are much better equipped to have meaningful conversations with patients about their belief systems when they use the SAS. This, in turn, fosters a therapeutic relationship that may eventually go a long way toward enhancing patient satisfaction and emotional well-being.

Another important tool is the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS), created by Piper et al. in 2020. The scale measures the dimensions of spiritual and existential well-being, including purpose and satisfaction in life (Erickson et al., 2022). The SWBS helps reveal how beliefs are involved in influencing health behaviors, coping mechanisms, and quality-of-life experiences among patients receiving nursing care. Incorporating the SWBS into nursing assessments allows health care professionals to better understand what role spirituality plays in a patient's experience of illness.

This knowledge is vital as it enables nurses to tend to care with empathy and relevance so that the delivery of care aligns with what the patient expects spiritually. Other studies also indicate that using such tools results in better clinical outcomes. For example, in the work of Deshpande et al. , 2021 use of spiritual assessment tools not only augments the emotional support offered to patients but also significantly contributes to better coping strategies and overall health outcomes of patients, especially those with chronic or terminal illnesses.

Besides this, according to Erickson et al. , 2022 administration of SWBS has resulted in improved patient satisfaction as well as emotional resilience when facing health challenges. The two instruments underscore the imperative need for nurses to recognize and affirm their patients' spiritual beliefs and even practices, hence contributing more to a holistic healthcare approach while honoring various perspectives on health and wellbeing.

Besides the SAS and SWBS, another increasingly popular tool in nursing practice is the FICA Spiritual History Tool, which stands for Faith, Importance, Community, and Addressing spiritual issues in care (Baldacchino & Draper, 2020).

The FICA offers a formalized approach that allows nurses to investigate the spiritual dimensions of their patients in an open discussion about faith and its health implications. Through the use of the FICA tool, nurses gain much more insight into their patients' viewpoints which results in a deeper connection as well as informed care planning.

The use of spiritual assessment instruments such as SAS, SWBS, and FICA only illustrate the dedication of nurses toward giving holistic care that is also centered on the patient. As spirituality proves to be an important part of health, the finding made that overall well-being and physical health convergence have huge benefits for patient outcomes shall be discussed in line with the provision of systematic care for spiritual needs by nurses. This permits support in a caring environment that therapies just not against physical ailments but also respects the emotional and spiritual aspects of patients' experiences.

In summary, the use of structured tools like the Spiritual Assessment Scale and the Spiritual Well-Being Scale and guidelines such as FICA are a must when you evaluate spirituality in nursing practice. These tools help to empower health care providers to deliver holistic care that involves spiritual matters which in turn lead to improved patient’s satisfaction and well-being.

    ## Week 2 Assignment

    ## Evidence Summary

    Name: Sacari Kebe

    Date: 3/16/2025

**Directions:** Identify a nursing clinical practice problem in your current or previous practice. Use this template to complete the Evidence Summary Assignment addressing your selected nursing clinical practice problem.

Answer the questions under each section with explanation and detail.

Correctly cite and reference information from scholarly sources that help support the discussion. Sources should be no more than five years old unless they are historical references.

    **Section 1: Discovery**

    1. Describe your selected nursing clinical practice problem. Explain your rationale for choosing this topic and summarize why this nursing clinical practice problem is the most important in your current or past practice area.

I chose to focus on childhood obesity because, as a pediatric and adolescent psychiatric nurse, I frequently encounter this issue within the population I serve. Obesity significantly affects both the physical and mental health of children and adolescents. In our community, childhood obesity continues to be a growing and concerning problem that needs attention and intervention.

    2. Define each PICOT element.

P- (Population): Children, ages 6-12 years old.

I- (Intervention): Lifestyle change – Increased physical activity.

C- (Comparison: Sedentary lifestyle / No increase in activity.

    O- (Outcome): Decrease in BMI.

T- (Time frame in months): 6 months.

    3. Write out your PICOT question using the standard format below:

    In _____ (P), how does _____ (I) compared to _____ (C) affect _____ (O) within _____ (T)?

_NOTE: In this standardized format, “affect” can be substituted with another verb, such as reduce, increase, or improve, to articulate the anticipated outcome more precisely._

In children 6-12 years of age (P), how does increased physical activity (I) compared to a sedentary lifestyle (C) affect BMI (O) within 6 months (T)?

    4. Describe how you selected the population, intervention, outcome, and time frame.

I selected the population based on my current career path and passion, as a nurse and mother. I based the intervention, outcome, and time frame on what was measurable, practical, and effective.

**Section 2: Evidence Summary Systematic Review**

Using only the Chamberlain University Library, locate one systematic review relevant to your chosen nursing clinical practice problem that supports the intervention and has been published within the past 5 years.

    1. Provide the complete APA reference to the evidence, including the permalink. State which database you found the evidence in.

    Julian, V., Ring-Dimitriou, S., Wyszyńska, J., Mazur, A., Matlosz, P., Frelut, M. L., Erhardt, E., Vlachopapadopoulou, E., Forslund, A., Boyland, E., Weghuber, D., & Thivel, D. (2022). 2. Explain how the evidence is relevant to your selected nursing practice problem and population.

It is highly relevant to the nursing practice problem of addressing obesity in the pediatric population.

    4. Explain how the evidence is relevant to your selected intervention. What data from the article helps support the implementation of this intervention into practice?

The study explores using physical activity on prescription (PAP) for children with obesity, which closely aligns with the need for effective strategies to help manage and reduce childhood obesity. My interventions are increased physical activity which directly aligns with the implemented intervention in this study of using PAP.

    **Section 4: Evidence-Based Interventions**

    1. Describe the selected evidence-based nursing intervention in detail. How do you believe this intervention could be implemented in your practice area?

The evidence-based intervention I have selected is, increased physical activity vs a sedentary lifestyle to lower BMI over the period of 6 months to improve obesity in children ages 6-12 years of age. Research has demonstrated that regular physical activity plays a key role in lowering BMI and addressing childhood obesity. In my practice, this intervention could be implemented by creating individualized physical activity plans for children, promoting age-appropriate exercises, and providing ongoing support to both the children and their families.

    2. Explain how the intervention supports the outcome and addresses your identified nursing clinical practice problem.

The intervention of increasing physical activity directly supports the outcome of lower BMI over a 6-month period and reducing childhood obesity by targeting one of the key factors contributing to high BMI, which is lack of physical activity.

    3. What interprofessional team members would it be important to collaborate with? Explain

As a registered nurse, it would be important to collaborate with several interprofessional team members. These would include pediatricians, dietitians, physical therapists, and social workers.

This would include pediatricians due to the age of the group we are treating. Dietitians can help address the dietary needs and changes that are required in combination with the increased activity to achieve the goal of lowering BMI. Physical therapists are important to address any physical limitation the child may have and design a healthy physical activity plan that is age appropriate. The social worker can help the child and family connect with available resources in the community to improve the changes of compliance.

    Measures Used in Epidemiology

![A close-up of hands holding a pen and a notebook AI-generated content may be incorrect.](https://www.sweetstudy.com/questions/measures-used-in-epidemiology-20893735)One important application of epidemiology is to identify factors that could increase the likelihood of a certain health problem occurring within a specific population. Epidemiologists use
_measures of effect_ to examine the association or linkage in the relationship between risk factors and emergence of disease or ill health. For instance, they may use measures of effect to better understand the relationships between poverty and lead poisoning in children, smoking and heart disease, or low birth weight and future motor skills. The following are some common measures used in epidemiology:

    ·
**Odds ratio**: The odds ratio quantifies the association between an independent variable (exposure) and a dependent variable (outcome). It is calculated as the odds that an effect will occur given the presence or exposure to a studied variable, compared to the odds when there is no exposure (e.g., lung cancer and smoking)

    ·
**Risk ratio (also called relative risk)**: Also quantifies the association between an independent variable and a dependent variable. The risk of an effect occurring in one population versus another population (e.g., preeclampsia in women <35 versus >35). Risks greater than one suggest that exposure to a given variable is associated with an increase in the risk of the outcome, and a risk ratio of less than one indicates that the exposure is associated with a decrease in the risk of the outcome.

    ·
**Mortality**: Measure of deaths in a particular population during a specified time interval. If this is attributed to a specific cause, it is referred to as cause-specific mortality.

    ·
**Morbidity**: Measure of instances of illness or disability in a population from a given cause (e.g., heart disease) during a specified time interval

    ·
**Incidence**: The occurrence of new cases of an effect or disease in a population over a defined time period relative to the size of the population at risk (e.g., new cases of COVID-19 in a population over a 7-day period/1000 people)

    ·
**Prevalence**: The number of all cases of an effect or disease, not just new ones, in a population at a given time relative to the size of the population (e.g., number of people with autism/1000)

What is the significance of these measures of effect for nursing practice? In this Discussion, you will consider this pivotal question.
